Paul Green (B.S.C-VIT/OEN) : The Winemaker
Paul is one of the exciting new breed of internationally focused and experienced winemakers. Winemakers like Paul are the bright future of premium Western Australian wine making – bringing a new dimension to traditional skills with an emphasis on creativity and quality – driven by the fantastic Margaret River fruit.
Paul was born in London in 1970 and shortly after the Green family immigrated to Western Australia. Both of Paul's parents were teachers so Paul’s early childhood was spent in various country towns in Western Australia. Eventually the Green family settled in the Margaret River region where his love affair with wine was born.
On leaving school Paul worked as an apprentice chef but his thirst for the outdoors led him to return to school to study Horticulture. At age 27, Paul returned to university to do a science degree in Viticulture and Oenology while working at Talijancich Wines to finance his study.
On completing his degree, Paul traveled to the U.S.A. to work at The Hogue Winery in Washington State. On his return Paul worked vintage 2001 at Evan’s and Tate Winery in Margaret River before coming to Harman’s Ridge Estate Winery in May 2001. In late 2001 Paul went to Trento in Italy to do a vintage before returning to Harman’s Ridge Estate for vintage 2002. Paul also worked the 2002 vintage in Trento before taking up the role of Chief Winemaker at Harman’s Ridge Estate.
Paul shares the Harman’s Ridge philosophy: Winemaking is about attention to detail and a clear definition of what you are trying to achieve. He says: My winemaking techniques are respectful of the regional and varietal character of the grapes and reflect the fact that I make wines which allow for full expression of the quality this region can achieve.
Paul leads a talented team who are creating a premium future for Harman’s Ridge Estate wines, at all levels.
